She was the one who whispered in my ear, not the other way around.
By morning, the whole town will know of our argument and I can hear my
boss now. He'll say I was in uniform and as such, represented the
county of Addison and the state of Vermont. I'll never be able to
explain the look in her eye, the way she licked her lips, or the
innuendo when she said, "Let's get out of here."
All I asked was, "Your place or mine?"
She had no reason to get so bent out of shape. After she cooled off,
she showed me the email, asked about alibis, and I simply replied it was
none of her business.
It was all downhill from there.
Hey Danni,
I
know we haven't spoken in forever but you're the only one I trust.
Someone is trying to kill me and I need to you in Middlebury, now. Don't
call or text. Someone hacked my phone. I'm begging you. Come as soon as
you can. When you get here, go straight to the Cornwall library. Milly
will call me and I'll meet you in the nonfiction section.
Thank you ever so much and despite what people may say, no, I'm not crazy.
This is real.
Fondly,
Stacy
